Three hours (minus the Local Lunchbox) of nuthin’ but Norton Records in celebration of the label’s 25th anniversary! It was the final day of the pledge drive, but you can still donate at www.wmse.org.
While you're listening, check out the Q&A I did with Miriam Linna and Billy Miller over at Sonic Diet, WMSE's blog. After that, grab the latest copy of Ugly Things for a 20-plus page feature that will enlighten you on all things Norton.
If you still need more, I did a roundup of a bunch of Nortonrific links the last time I paid tribute to the great label. Yeah, I'll probably do it all again in another few years! Why not?

Playlist for 5/6/09
Week 2 of the Spring Pledge Drive was pretty darn quiet. Your pledges are still very much needed - you can do so right here or call 414-799-1917. Lots of cool gifts can be yours. Do it. Please, please, please.
I played the new album from Jack-O & the Tennessee Tearjerkers, The Disco Outlaw, which I dig much. Jack and other Memphis people, including Amy LaVere, Harlan T. Bobo and Ben Nichols from Lucero, are getting some attention for appearing in Craig Brewer’s $5 Cover on MTV. Brewer, the man behind Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan, follows around Memphis musicians on the show, blending fact and fiction while capturing LaVere in her undies and rapper Muck Sticky acting wacky with midgets and girls with whips. Fun stuff. It’s the first MTV show that I have even thought about looking at in at least a decade. Where are you tonight, Beavis and Butthead?
Next week the I Love My Label segment will feature the late Mammoth Records out of Carrboro, North Carolina. Post any requests in the comments.

4/29/09 playlist
I suppose my first show during a WMSE pledge drive went pretty well except in the it’d-sure-be-nice-to-be-overwhelmed-with-calls-and-raise-lots-of-money-for-the-station sense. Corey was there ready for action, and, alas, action was sorta quiet. The station hopes to raise $125,000 by July, but please don’t wait to donate. Support Milwaukee’s finest purveyor of independent, freeform radio right now. Call 414-799-1917 or pledge online. Thanks again, Corey, for staying up late, providing bucket loads of witty banter and putting up with me playing the music way too damn loud in the studio.
As for the music, I spent a big ‘ol chunk of time playing songs from bands performing at the Ponderosa Stomp, which was held April 28-29 in New Orleans. I know one Rick Cornell was there and I would love to hear a report. In my pledge drive/Ponderosa/grading papers/freelance writing/editing the magazine/Corey’s –so-damn-good-lucking-it’s-easy-to-get-distracted fog, I forgot to mention the International Pop Overthrow, going on tonight through Sunday at Linneman’s. Nick Pipitone, the Nice Outfit, the Lackloves, the International Date Lines and The Pugilists are just a few of the performers. While it certainly would have made more sense to do a before the festival set of songs on the show, I will do a post-festival set of songs next week in my attempt to partially make up for it.
