Playlist for 7/16/2010: Giving in to the Wild Side of Life

Above photos courtesy of Julie Workman.

What a show. What a weekend. Jack "Oblivian" Yarber and John Paul Keith were kind enough to stop by the station before their gig Friday night at the Bayview Brewhaus. Both talk about touring, recording plans and more. A dynamite show was delivered that night from John Paul during his set with the One Four Fives and Jack O. & the Tennessee Tearjerkers later on. The show's other guest, Brian from Big Rock Candy Mountain, filled in listeners about his must-read blog, revealed some of his 2010 faves, and spun the latest Goner 7" from King Lee and Quintron. Had a blast hanging out with Brian (far left in group photo) and Good John (pictured above with his rare beer-in-hand look) over the weekend - even though they went to a warehouse filled with vinyl goodness without me and returned with this gift for me. Revenge will be had, gents.

Playlist for 4/30/2010: Get Hip

Pittsburgh's legendary Get Hip Records got the I Love My Label treatment on the show Friday. It was incredibly fun to spin nearly three hours of the label's deep offerings of garage, punk, pop, surf and more. Barbara Garcia-Bernardo, Vice President of Get Hip and wife of founder Gregg Kostelich of The Cynics, was even nice enough to do a Q&A with me, which you can find on WMSE's Sonic Diet blog. The prolific (and incredibly nice) Jack Rice, bassist for the Blow Pops, also stopped by to talk about his band's time on Get Hip, being huge in Finland and the pitfalls of drinking with Paul Collins.

Playlist for 4/2/10: The Doc is In

The 2010 MLB season begins Sunday night, so I was required by law to begin the show with a baseball theme. I gave a tip of the hat (with an excellent instrumental courtesy of Philly's - by way of D.C. - late, great Delta 72 ) to Roy Halladay, my Phils' celebrated offseason acquisition to kick things off. It was pretty quiet around the WMSE studios with the business office closed for Good Friday, but I managed to scare a listener into thinking a Dead Milkmen member had died by playing a set of their songs. Sorry, no Milkmen murdered or otherwise done in – DM guitarist/vocalist/founder Joe Jack Talcum is coming to Milwaukee on April 7 to play with the Goodnight Loving at the Bay View Brewhaus.
