Playlist for 6-24-09: Hey there, summer

Back again after a week away and a playing-music-at-top-volume-all-alone-in-the-studio-at-midnight-good-time was had by, uh, me at least. New music from Dinosaur Jr., Patterson Hood and Daddy and fun WMSE library finds in the Dangtrippers, Carnival Season, Mono Puff and Bobby Sutliff. Played a song-title-of-the-year Chuck Mead ditty and recently interviewed the man himself for Country Standard Time. I’m planning an all-covers show next week. Free Ike

The Ike Reilly Assassination play Saturday night at 7:30 at the Summer Soulstice on North Ave. Should be a staggering evening, for sure. Here's a cool story my wife, Corri, wrote on Ike in 2008.

Zero Zero Hour this week ...

I'll be in Madison with my wife to see Kasey Chambers, Shane Nicholson and Justin Townes Earle. Marty of the Free-Form Funhouse Marties is sitting in for me this week. I will be back next week, however, with more independent label madness.

Zero Hour playlist for 6/10/09: Stax, It's What's for Dinner

A big, funky bucket of Stax was served this week as part of my I Love My Label segment, which spotlights assorted noteworthy independent labels. As I mentioned on the show, Stax is one of the great labels of all time, indie or otherwise, which is not all a new idea. It does, however, help indicate how difficult it is to sum up a label’s output, even in two hours time. Instead, I tried to give a bit of a Stax/Volt sampler, with perhaps more focus on the label’s early history. A Part 2 is certainly in order. Part 3 and 4, too. Well worth checking out, if you haven’t already, is the 2007 documentary on Stax, Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story, directed by Robert Gordon and Morgan Neville and narrated by Samuel L. Jackson.

Zero Hour playlist for 6/3/09: C-A-D-I-L-L-A-C

Since we’re all part-owners of General Motors now, I figure I should be getting a Cadillac any day. In recognition of my fine new ride, I played nothing but Cadillac songs for the first hour. There sure have been a hell of a lot of humdingin' songs written about that luxury vehicle. I was happy to see several new local discs in WMSE’s stacks, including Get Up and Run from the Reckless Hearts on Off the Hip and an EP (demo?) from the Sugar Stems.
I Love My Label will feature the legendary Stax Records next week. If there are any Stax/Volt songs you have in mind, just let me know in the comments.
