Playlist for 1/13/10: Paging Dr. Scholl
This week’s opening theme is dedicated to the Standing Babas of Mumbai, who I learned about through the fabulous HoundBlog. I’m all for spiritual enlightenment, but it makes my feet hurt just to think about these hardcore fellas. New music this week from Bettie Serveert, Freedy Johnston, the Scruffs and Ray Wylie Hubbard. I also debuted yet another new segment, the Hour Hunch, simply an all-vinyl 60 minutes with a name taken from Hasil Adkins’ caveman classic. To lead the Hunch off, I played a few songs from Norton’s two brain-numbingly bad-ass Kim Fowley comps, One Man’s Garbage: and Another Man’s Gold: Lost Treasures from the Vaults 1959-1969 Vol. 1 and 2. The new segment left me winded and tongue-tied, so next time I might actually play a few songs that hit the three-minute mark. Maybe not.
In other news, Zero Hour will be moving to a new time slot. Starting Feb. 12, the show will be aired Fridays from noon to 3 p.m. between the Chicken Shack with Jonny Z and Sonia’s Blues Drive. Buzz’s Garage will head to Monday nights from 6 to 9. I’m very excited and hope you will tune in. Not sure yet who will be taking my current time slot, but I will be sure to let you know when I find out. Insomniacs, drunks, third-shift workers and others who are saddened by Zero Hour’s move can still download the show and listen in the wee hours if that will help.

Playlist for 1/6/10: Tearing Down the Walls of Jericho
I tried a trivia question in relation to my opening theme this week: It Happened One Night, the classic movie the Mrs. and I watched New Year’s Eve. The prize? Two free tickets to the Residents on Feb. 16 at Turner Hall. The response? A very quiet phone. Not sure if I’ll try that again. New music this week from Grant Hart, Visqueen and Mama Rosin, a tribute to the recently departed Willie Mitchell and an extended set inspired by Joe Bonomo’s killer (heh, heh) new book Jerry Lee Lewis: Lost and Found.
