Zero Hour playlist for 5/27/09 - Goodbye bloody mary mornings and Jay Bennett R.I.P.

The Bloody-Mary-Morning beginning theme concluded this week – all is better with the world. It was nice to get quite a few phone calls this week – people are actually listening at 2:30 in the morning! I did a short tribute to Jay Bennett, who passed away unexpectedly May 24. I forgot to play “Harvey Haddix” by the Baseball Project – Tuesday was the 50th anniversary of the pitcher’s nearly perfect 12-inning game in Milwaukee.

Playlist for 5/20/09 - Beatniks, blood and Joey Ramone

Mary last week. Bloody/blood this week. One song in common both weeks. Any guesses what theme I might begin with next week? I was probably a little heavy on the twang this week, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. What would have been Joey Ramone's 58th birthday was recognized with a set of Joey-themed songs. No 7-inch Six-Pack – mainly because I had a bunch of non-45 stuff I wanted to play. It returns next week and by gosh and darn, shall star B.J. Thomas and the Triumphs.

Playlist for 5/13/09 - Mammoth Comes Alive

Big ‘ol load of songs from Mammoth Records this week for the I Love My Label segment. The late label just had a 21st anniversary party/reunion at the legendary Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC, the city where it originated in 1989. Rick Cornell’s cool article in the Independent Weekly looking at big and small sellers on the label inspired me to pick Mammoth this time around. Thanks, Rick. I ran out of time at the end and didn’t get in several songs I had planned on playing. Maybe I’ll spin them next week.

I mentioned last week about $5 Cover, the Memphis music fact and fiction show on MTV. You should also check out $5 Cover Amplified, where you can see nicely done documentaries about artists on the show, including Jack Yarber (aka Jack-O, aka Jack Obilivian) who cleans homes when he’s not keeping rock-and-roll alive.

Playlist for 5/6/09

Week 2 of the Spring Pledge Drive was pretty darn quiet. Your pledges are still very much needed - you can do so right here or call 414-799-1917. Lots of cool gifts can be yours. Do it. Please, please, please.

I played the new album from Jack-O & the Tennessee Tearjerkers, The Disco Outlaw, which I dig much. Jack and other Memphis people, including Amy LaVere, Harlan T. Bobo and Ben Nichols from Lucero, are getting some attention for appearing in Craig Brewer’s $5 Cover on MTV. Brewer, the man behind Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan, follows around Memphis musicians on the show, blending fact and fiction while capturing LaVere in her undies and rapper Muck Sticky acting wacky with midgets and girls with whips. Fun stuff. It’s the first MTV show that I have even thought about looking at in at least a decade. Where are you tonight, Beavis and Butthead?

Next week the I Love My Label segment will feature the late Mammoth Records out of Carrboro, North Carolina. Post any requests in the comments.
